Is installing More Heating Controls a Good Idea?

Setting the temperature on your thermostat can be a bone of contention in many households. Often, what’s right for one area (or person) can be too hot or cold for other rooms. This can be amplified when someone is cooking in a hot kitchen, or people are coming and going opening doors and creating draughts. Thankfully, there is an alternative to banging your head against a wall and it might be simpler than you think.

Every room in your house serves a different purpose, so it’s only natural they should be a different temperature. The ideal temperature for sleeping will leave you shivering when you step out of a hot shower. There are other benefits to having greater control over your heating. Here we’ll discuss some of them so you can decide for yourself if increasing the number of heating controls in your house would be good for you.

What is multi-zone heating?

Many older houses have a single thermostat that sets the temperature throughout the whole home. If lots of people live in your home, this can lead to a battle of the dial. This is because we don’t all like to be the same temperature. This is where multi-zone heating comes in.

Multi-zone heating divides your house into several smaller zones, each with their own heating controls. The ncumber of zones you have is largely down to personal preference. Some people are happy with single separate heating controls for each floor, where as some people like to have one for each bedroom.

What are the benefits of more heating controls?

Save energy and money – Increasing the number of zones in your home has been proven to save as much as 20% on your heating bills. This saving is because you use less energy, which also makes you more environmentally friendly. Imagine just how much energy would be saved if every home reduced their consumption by just 10%, the potential savings are huge.

Be more comfortable – Depending on how you split your house, you can design it so everyone gets to enjoy the temperature they want. If you like to turn the heating up before bed, but your kids moan about being too hot, then they can have command of their own heating controls.

When everyone is happier with the temperature it makes for a happier home. No more shouts of ‘who turned the heating up’ as a parent walks past the thermostat.

Some of the variations might include:

Kitchen: The use of an oven or hob often overheats a kitchen, and at times you need no heating in there at all. It’s better to keep a lower temperature where food is regularly stored.

Bedroom: Some people like their bedroom to be toasty so it’s easier to stick your legs out the quilt in the morning, while others prefer a cooler temperature, which can aid recovery. According to the National Sleep Foundation the ideal temperature is 18.5 degrees Celsius (65 Fahrenheit). They say a cooler bedroom aids sleep as the body naturally lowers our internal thermostat during sleep. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, as many sleep easier at different temperatures.

Bathroom: Having heating controls for the temperature in your bathroom can be really useful, as you may want to adjust the temperature according to what you’re doing. For instance, you wouldn’t need to do anything if you’re just popping in to grab something out of your bathroom cabinets, but if you have a shower you may want to increaser the temperature to lessen the shock of stepping out of a hot shower into a cold room, just remember to turn it down again as you leave.

Living room: We all want our living room to be cosy when we’re cuddling up in front of the TV. Having individual heating controls for your living room can help to create the perfect temperature to slip your socks off, put your feet up and relax in.

Lesser-used rooms: If you have a spare bedroom that gets little use, then having more flexibility with your heating controls can save you wasting money heating a space no one is using. If you have guests due to arrive, or someone sleeping over, then it’s easy enough to turn the temperature up just for the duration of their stay.

Not all spaces are equal

In addition to what you use the room for, there’s also the fact many rooms have different airflow. Some front doors open directly into the living room, while if you have a conservatory it could lose heat quicker than internal rooms. Many factors can have an impact on the temperature and humidity of a room, such as:

• The size and aspect of the windows
• How well insulted a space is
• The number of electrical appliances

So even when trying to maintain a constant and consistent temperature throughout your home, it can quite often require different temperatures for different areas.

Be comfortable for longer

When a single zone system has to heat a whole property it is often working far harder than a system with less to heat. Just as the 20% saving on heating bills suggests, less work for your heating system can mean less wear and tear, which can increase the lifespan of your system.
